An Unfortunate Dose of Reality

An unfortunate dose of reality.

A few weeks ago, I asked you to take a few minutes to reflect on the previous year and all of the wins you accomplished.

This week, I want you to do the exact opposite.

I want you to spend a few minutes and reflect on all the terrible, horrible, no good, very bad things that happened to you last year.

The things that caused you to lose sleep, lose faith or lose your way.

Ugh, I know it’s not fun, but do it.  I did it the other day and came up with 10.

10 significant stumbles, challenges or fall flat on my face events that happened last year.  That’s nearly one a month.

Now, I want you to know two things from your information.

  1. I want you to celebrate your resilience.  You’re still here.  You’re still moving forward.  You learned a lot from whatever it was.  And you’ve got an experience to pull from in the future.
  1. I want you to get comfy cozy with the fact that this year won’t be different.  They might come in different disguises and forms, they might be more significant or they might be less, but you will have challenges and struggles this year.

Why did I take the morning to point this out to you?

Because as we stare optimistically at the horizon of a new year, we often set goals and intentions without seriously considering the challenges and stumbles along the way.  We hope that it’ll be smooth sailing and that it’ll all go down as planned.

It won’t.

But that’s ok.  There’s no need to anxiously await the anonymous but inevitable monster, but you should know that just like last year, you’ll meet the monster and slay it, probably earning some valuable scars along the way.

You may stumble, you may fall, you may be hobbled a bit.  And you’ll probably be set back.

But you’ll pick yourself up, you’ll get back on the horse, and you’ll keep charging forward.
