The Coach Who Almost Didn’t Come Back to Fitness — and Why She’s Glad She Did

Jennie Cooper walked into SSC already able to do butterfly pull-ups, which Kenny found suspicious. Turns out she had good reason — MIT mechanical engineering degree, nine years in the Marine Corps including flying casualty evacuation helicopters in Iraq, a stint supervising drill instructors at Parris Island, a master’s in exercise science, and a PhD in human physiology from Oregon.

She also quit a government consulting job in DC to coach at Gold’s Gym for minimum wage because she believed in it that much.

This conversation is equal parts hilarious and honest — about walking away from careers that don’t fit, the raw beauty of watching people pour everything out in a workout, and why the gym is the one place where none of your credentials or baggage matter.

Oh, and she’s learning Russian. Just because she likes how it sounds.
