Six Miles Up, Middle of December, No Tent: Tim Corcoran on Elk, Survival, and What the Wilderness Teaches

Tim Corcoran has been teaching wilderness survival for 25 years. He knows how to build fire, read elk tracks, and cache 200 pounds of meat in cedar trees in the dark. He was still nervous to walk into SSC.

He came in at 49 because a doctor wanted to put him on statins. He stayed because the community grabbed him. And somewhere in between, he told Kenny about surviving an accidental December overnight on a Idaho mountain with his wife and two sons — no tent, no sleeping bags, a fire reflecting off a granite boulder, and cougar tracks circling their elk cache in the morning.

This conversation covers all of it, plus the father-son wilderness program that Kenny calls the single best experience he and Garrison have ever had together.
