Jonathan and Trevor Riley are brothers, members at SSC, and cage fighters. Jonathan is 3-1. Trevor is 4-0. They started four years ago looking for self-defense and ended up falling in love with Gracie Jiu-Jitsu — the original version, built for the smaller person to survive against a bigger, stronger opponent.
This conversation covers what most people get wrong about martial arts, why the first punch to the face changes everything you thought you knew about yourself, and what it felt like to wake up after getting knocked out in 19 seconds after eight weeks of training for it.
The lessons are the same ones that show up in every episode of this podcast: show up consistently, compete against yourself, be okay with losing, and understand that a black belt is just a white belt who never quit.
