Nah, I got it

I often “joke” about how I’ll probably meet my death by getting something ridiculous off a shelf.

But it’s probably true.

Just a few months ago I got a 6’ tall, 400 pound gun safe out of the back of my truck alone.  (I just needed to slide it out the back far enough to tip it on to the ground, no big deal.  Not a scratch on me or the safe!).

Last time we moved I got our couch down the stairs alone.  (Jenn wasn’t impressed).

Come to think of it, Jenn hasn’t been super impressed by many of my “I got this” feats of independence.

When we first started dating I was perplexed by her surprisingly strong opinion that I shouldn’t night dive for lobsters off the beach in Santa Barbara alone anymore.

While she most definitely has a point, I really do wish that more people had the confidence and independence to just tackle stuff on their own.

I think there is something sincerely empowering about knowing that you are entirely capable on your own.

So many people I know are afraid of traveling alone, afraid to take on adventures alone and just plain lack the courage to just try and see what happens.  (Most often you find out it’s not as bad as you thought).

But the amount of life and opportunity that you miss out on is significant.  Perhaps more importantly is the empowerment that happens when you start to say, “why not?”

How does this all relate back to a fitness audience?

Well:

  • Strength gives you the capability
  • Conditioning gives you the capacity
  • Resilience gives you the buffer in case it doesn’t go quite to plan
  • Confidence gives you the permission to try
  • Experience gives you the knowledge that you’ll figure it out

So at the end of the day, my wish for the world all starts with fitness.

What could you be saying “I got this?” to more of?
