Medicine

Medicine is amazing.

This may slightly blur the lines of my scope of practice, but I think it’s relevant to share.

Because of advances in medicine, we are living longer and we are living better (which is the goal of my business).

Once death sentence diagnoses are now easily treatable.

Prevention of death sentence diagnoses is easily facilitated.

Life is able to be more readily enjoyed, both physically and mentally by taking a prescription.

The reason I mention this is because of the stigma that I’ve felt when talking to clients and potential clients about their being on medication.

I feel as though there has become an anti- prescription medication movement.  Especially over the last decade or so.

Whether it is because of a distrust of big pharma, an overswinging of the pendulum towards holistic health or just an internal disappointment in our own body that we have to keep it optimized through something man made, I want to remind people that it’s not necessarily “bad” to be on medication.  Nor is it necessarily “good” to stay off medication.

And all of that can be said to be the opposite as well.

I think that most importantly of all, what I’d like people to hear is that I’ve seen people do all the right things, but still significantly benefit from what their physicians have recommended.  Sometimes our genetics or personal experience just dictate that pharmacological intervention is a net positive.

My unique perspective on this from knowing all sides of people’s stories.  I hear about all of this stuff and just want to put it out there.

I hear about GLP-1s, psychiatric medications, hormone replacement therapy, blood pressure medications, and many more.

Do I think that behavior change should be evaluated first and in conjunction?  Absolutely.  After all, I am a habit modification coach.  But it’s not always black and white, and it’s not a personal reflection on your efforts or personal self worth if your results, life and longevity can be improved if your day includes taking some form of medication.

I’ll get down off my soapbox, but if you’re out there feeling like you’re less awesome because you’re able to benefit from the miracle that is modern medicine, please don’t.  There’s plenty of shame and self loathing to go around without that shit.
