I sure hope you didn’t spend more time over the weekend playing dress up and managing your make believe football team than you will on your fitness or nutrition this week.
I mean, it’s obviously none of my business, and I’m clearly very biased, but when the vast majority of people who do not exercise, or quit exercise tell me “I just don’t have time”, I gotta make some observations.
- 3 hours a week of exercise is nearly unanimously agreed upon as a dramatically life altering amount of exercise. Longer lifespan, better healthspan, look better naked in 180 minutes a week (actually it’s only 150, but lets call it 3 hours).
- There are 168 hours in a week.
- 8 hours a night of sleep takes away 56.
- 9 hours of work, 5 days a week takes away 45.
- 3 hours a day of meals takes away 21.
- As far as I can tell, those are the have-tos, and I rounded up compared to most, but let’s figure that people shower, clean up, get dressed, read, etc on the tail ends of their sleep and meals.
- That leaves us with 46 hours in the week remaining. Or 6.5 per day. Remember, I’m asking for 3 hours per week. Let’s even round that up for commuting and call it 6 hours devoted to fitness per week.
Yes, I know, kids have to be driven to practice, groceries need to get picked up, you want some downtime for yourself, you probably have hobbies outside of fitness, etc. I totally get that, but we’re talking about 40 unaccounted for hours in the week (or enough time for another full time job…)
So where do I think most people spend it?
- Screen time. Open up your phone and go to your screen time. The US averages 2 hours per day for adults. There goes 14 free hours a week.
- TV/Netflix. The US averages 4 hours daily! That seems high, but remember my initial statement. If you spend all Sunday watching football, you’re watching from 10am to 8pm PST. That’s 10 hours right there. So there’s another 28 hours.
Boom, there goes your 40 free hours.
Again, I want to reiterate that I’m not advocating that you abstain from anything mindless or pleasure based.
I just think you should explore deeper if you have time for all the other stuff, but say you don’t have time for fitness.
It could be that you just don’t schedule it in.
It could be that it’s overwhelming because you don’t know what to do.
It could be that you feel like you don’t see the impact of your efforts.
It could be that you just end up overdoing it and start off so sore and broken that you can’t keep it up.
Or it could be any number of other reasons.
Thankfully, we’re here to help. We provide all of the above and more so that you can sit on the couch all Sunday, knowing that you’ve already checked your fitness boxes for the week and that the boxes will be checked in the upcoming week too.
