Best Ski Season Yet

Schweitzer is opening in 16 days.

But if you like your knees and don’t like getting runover on the ribbon of death before the season even gets going, you’re probably eyeing heading up the mountain in more like 4-8 weeks.

If you want to start this season off by going top to bottom without breaks to catch your breath or rest your legs, heres what you should be thinking

Skiing involves:

Relatively short/intense work periods with long rest.  Hard and heavy breathing, then a long time to recover.

You spend a lot more time in line and on the lift than you do skiing.  If you listen to music, think about how many songs you get through on the downhill compared to how long you are on the lift.

A long “event”. Unless you take the lift straight up to the sky house for a drink, you’re probably skiing for at least 2 hours if not significantly more.

Lots of muscular contractions.  I don’t have the attention span to count my turns, but I know it’s a lot.  Even if you’re just straight lining it down the hill, you’re making fine motor adjustments that add up.

Think of that in terms of repetitions, and you’ll realize that going straight off the couch into that kind of work and you’ll know why you’re exhausted for the first few days of season.

Lots of static holds.  As you move through your turns, you’re holding that position for a bit.

Lots of overall balance and control.  Maybe you realize, maybe you don’t, but your awareness of your body in space equates to a lot of effort.

If you’re working out on your own, you should build a plan around those things.  Happy to help if I can.

If you have realized you just aren’t going to succeed on your own, the great news is that what we do within our sessions here at Sandpoint Strength cover a significant majority of those bases.
